Golden Bull of 1222
Golden Bull of 1222
the charter promulgated under pressure from a group of feudal lords, the so-called servitors of the king, by the Hungarian king Andrew II Arpad. It strengthened the privileges of the nobility, assuring them of freedom from taxation, promising them that judicial proceedings would be held in the counties, and limiting obligatory military service outside Hungary. The Golden Bull allowed the upper and middle nobility to exercise the right of insurrection against the king in the event he should violate the bull—a provision that was abrogated in 1687.
