Garnier, Charles

(Saint Charles Garnier) (shärl gärnyā`), 1606–49, French missionary in North America, one of the Jesuit Martyrs of North America. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1624 and went as a missionary to the Huron of Canada in 1636. He was killed by the Iroquois. Feast: Sept. 26 or (among the Jesuits) Mar. 16.

Garnier, Charles

(1825–1898)A French architect who developed the luxury flat style in the rebuilding of Paris. He also designed the grandiose Neobaroque Opera House in Paris in 1861, a triumph of rich color, ornate decoration, and highly disciplined control of mass and space. Other work includes the casino at Monte Carlo in 1878.
