[′jin ‚pōl] (mechanical engineering) A hand-operated derrick which has a nearly vertical pole supported by guy ropes; the load is raised on a rope that passes through a pulley at the top and over a winch at the foot. Also known as guyed-mast derrick; pole derrick; standing derrick.
