gnomonic map projection gnomonic map projectionAn example of equatorial gnomonic projection.A perspective map projection on a plane tangent to the surface of a sphere having the point of projection at the center of the sphere. The projection is neither conformal nor equal area. It is the only projection in which great circles on the sphere are represented as straight lines. The projections can be polar, equatorial, or oblique, depending upon whether the point of tangency is at the poles, the equator, or anywhere between the pole and the equator. In this projection, great circles are straight lines, whereas rhumb lines appear as curved lines. |
