In east-central MO, west of Saint Louis; organized Nov 25, 1820 (prior to statehood) from Franklin County. Name Origin: For the Gasconade River, which runs through it. It is believed that French residents of Saint Louis gave this name to the river and general area for the bragging of the inhabitants when they went to Saint Louis; an allusion to the residents of the French province of Gascony, supposed to be boastful
