Gascoyne

 

a river in Western Australia. Length, 780 km; basin area, 79,000 sq km. The Gascoyne arises in and flows through the plateau of Western Australia, emptying into Shark Bay on the Indian Ocean. Its water level fluctuates sharply according to the season. Its bed dries out in the dry season, but from May to July stormy floods occur. The average discharge of water is approximately 20 cu m per second. The port Carnarvon is situated at its mouth, where there is only underground flow.
