Gloucester, Henry William Frederick Albert, duke of

(glŏs`stər, glô`stər), 1900–1974, British prince; third son of George V, brother of Edward VIII and George VI, and uncle of Elizabeth II. He was created duke in 1928. He was educated at Sandhurst and made the army his career, serving as a major general in World War II. Governor-general of Australia from 1945 to 1947, he was promoted to the rank of field marshal in 1955.
