Ghor, Al

 

a tectonic basin in Israel, Syria, and Jordan, between the El Bekaa valley to the north and the Wadi al-Araba valley to the south. Length, approximately 300 km (from north to south): maximum width, approximately 25 km. The valley is surrounded by steep slopes with a relative height of 1,000–1,400 m and has no external drainage.

Within Al Ghor are the Jordan River system. Lakes Hula and Tiberias, and the Dead Sea. whose surface is 395 m below sea level. The shores of the Dead Sea and the region at the lower reaches of the Jordan are the lowest point of land in the world. The climate and natural vegetation are of the semidesert type.
