Gonzáles Diáz, Galo

Born Feb. 22, 1894, in Nogales, Valparaiso Province; died Mar. 8, 1958, in Santiago. Chilean labor leader.

From 1917 to 1929, Gonzáles Diaz was an unskilled worker in the copper mines and then a docker in Valparaiso. In 1925 he organized a trade union of Chilean transport workers and became its general secretary. In 1927 he joined the Communist Party of Chile. From 1929 to 1930 he was secretary for organizational questions of the regional party committee of Valparaiso. He became a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Chile in 1930. From 1930 to 1932 he headed the professional federation of transport workers and was simultaneously a member of the National Council of the Workers’ Federation of Chile. From 1934 to 1946 he headed the cadre control commission of the party’s Central Committee. From 1940 to 1949 he edited the theoretical and political journal of the party’s Central Committee, Principios. From 1946 to 1949 he was secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Chile for organizational questions. From 1949 to 1958 he was general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Chile.
