González, Carmelo

 

Born July 16. 1920, in Havana. Cuban graphic artist and painter.

González studied at the San Alejandro National School of Arts in Havana, and in New York. He is an eminent master of Cuban revolutionary graphic art and a founder of the Association of Graphic Artists of Cuba (1948) as well as the poster studio of the Union of Writers and Artists. His works (for example, the series of woodcuts Cuba—Free Land of America, 1963) are distinguished by generalized representation, dynamism of line, and tonal contrast.
