(fün), Ger. Fünen, island (1992 pop. 440,261), c.1,340 sq mi (3,471 sq km), Fyn co., S central Denmark. Odense, Svendborg, Nyborg, Assens, and Middelfart are the chief cities of Fyn, which is the second largest of the Danish islands. a Danish island with an area of approximately 3,000 sq km and a population, including small adjacent islands, of 448,100 (1977). The coast of Fyn is low-lying and indented by bays. The island is a morainal plain with hills that reach an elevation of 131 m. Most of the island is given over to cultivation of sugar beets, barley, and pastures. Dairy farming and swine raising play an important role in the economy. Fyn is linked with the Jutland Peninsula by bridges across the Lille Belt and with nearby islands, including Sjaelland, by ferry. The island’s principal city is Odense.
