To manage to escape a dangerous situation without being killed. Sometimes used hyperbolically. So many of my friends died in the war—I truly don't know how I got out with my life. It was such a horrific accident that I'm shocked anyone got out with their lives. The meeting turned ugly after Jeff started making accusations.
