Félix Joseph Henri Lacaze-Duthiers

Born May 15, 1821, in Montpezat; died July 21, 1901, in La Fons, Dor-dogne Department. French zoologist. Member of the Paris Academy of Sciences (1871).

Lacaze-Duthiers became a professor at the University of Lille in 1854 and at the Museum of Natural History in 1865. Beginning in 1868 he was a professor in the faculty of natural sciences at the Sorbonne. His principal works were on the individual development of polyps and on the comparative anatomies of mollusks and coelenterates. During the post-Darwinian period, Lacaze-Duthiers was the leader of the opposition to the teaching of evolution in France. He founded marine zoological stations in Roscoff (1872) and Bagnols (1881).
