a city (since 1933) in Sverdlovsk Oblast, RSFSR, located on the Bol’shoi Reft River (Ob’ basin). Located there is the terminal railroad station on the branch line (36 km long) from Bazhenovo station (on the Sverdlovsk-Tiumen’ line). Population, 76,000 (1969; in 1926, 7,600). The grest Bazhenovo asbestos deposits, discovered in 1885, are located in the vicinity of Asbest. The city has an asbestos mining and concentrating combine, a plant producing industrial asbestos products, and a scientific research institute on asbestos. There is also a mining technicum, a medical school, and a geological museum.
