hydroxymethyl glutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors

hydroxymethyl glutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors

Also known as statins (see STATINS), these are drugs that block the liver's production of cholesterol by competitive inhibition of the enzyme that catalyzes the rate-limiting step of cholesterol synthesis. These drugs can lower the levels of low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) by 25–45 per cent and a number of major trials have shown their benefits in preventing heart attacks and other effects of ATHEROSCLEROSIS. Up to 30 per cent of patients, however, have genetic variations that prevent them from responding to these drugs. The HMG Co-A reductase inhibitors include atorvastatin, cerivastatin, fluvastatin, pravastatin, rosuvastatin and simvastatin.
