 [hi-pro´mә-lōs] a propylene glycol ether of methylcellulose, supplied in differing degrees of viscosity; used as a suspending and viscosity-increasing agent and tablet binder, coating, and excipient in pharmaceutical preparations, and applied topically to the conjunctiva to protect and lubricate the cornea. Called also hydroxypropyl methylcellulose.hypromellose phthalate a phthalic acid ester of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, used as a coating agent for tablets and granules.
