Iakimovich, Ales’ Ivanovich

(also Aleksandr I. Iakimovich). Born Jan. 4 (17), 1904, in the village of Churilovo, in what is now Uzda Raion, Minsk Oblast. Soviet Byelorussian writer. Honored Cultural Worker of the Byelorussian SSR (1968). Member of the CPSU since 1947.

One of the founders of Byelorussian children’s literature, Iakimovich is the author of collections containing novellas, short stories, and fairy tales. His collections include Victory (1932), Vernidub the Blacksmith (1936), Moscow Speaking (1951), Bold People (1960), The End of Servitude (1968), Kastus’ Kalinovskii (1971), and A Difficult Year (1976). He has translated classic works of Russian literature into Byelorussian.

Iakimovich has been awarded two orders and various medals.
