Barvinok, Ganna

(pseudonym of Aleksandra Mikhailovna Belozerskaia-Kulish). Born Apr. 23 (May 5), 1828, on the Khutor (Ukrainian farmstead) Motronovka near Borzna; died June 23 (July 6), 1911. Ukrainian writer. Born into the family of a landowner.

In the 1860’s Barvinok wrote stories and novellas about the hard lives of peasant women (for example, The Drunkard, Evil Not Without Good, and A Domestic Misfortune). Some of her works are filled with sentimentality and a striving to smooth over class conflicts in the Ukrainian village of the second half of the 19th century.
