Parasitization by one of the roundworms (nematodes) Ancylostoma duodenale or Necator americanus . Hookworm infestation (ancylostomiasis) occurs world-wide in areas where people go barefoot. The mouth parts of the worms are equipped with securing hooks. Large infestations cause abdominal pain, diarrhoea, severe anaemia and debility. There are effective ANTHELMINTIC drugs to remove the worms.
