Iakovenko, Vasilii Grigor’evich

Born Mar. 3, 1889, in the village of Taseevo, Kansk District, Eniseisk Province; died July 29, 1937. One of the organizers of the partisan movement in Siberia during the Civil War of 1918–20, Soviet state figure. Member of the CPSU from July 1917.

The son of a peasant, Iakovenko took part in World War I. Late in 1917 he became chairman of the Taseevo volost (small rural district) soviet. Between 1919 and 1922 he served first as chairman of the Council of the Northern Kansk Partisan Front and later as chairman of the Kansk district revolutionary committee and executive committee; he also served as deputy chairman of the Krasnoiarsk provincial executive committee. In 1922 and 1923, Iakovenko was people’s commissar of agriculture and people’s commissar of social security of the RSFSR.

Iakovenko joined the staffs of the All-Union Central Executive Committee and Gosplan (State Planning Commission) of the USSR in 1926. In 1927 he joined the Trotskyist-Zinovievist anti-party bloc. He turned to economic work in 1935.

A delegate to the Twelfth and Thirteenth Party Congresses, Iakovenko was elected a member of the Central Control Commission at the latter congress. Iakovenko was a member of the All-Union Central Executive Committee.
