Gakkel’, Iakov Iakovlevich

 

Born July 18, 1901, in St. Petersburg; died Dec. 30, 1965, in Leningrad. Soviet oceanographer; doctor of geography (1950). Son of I. M. Gakkel’. Professor and chairman of the department of geography of the Arctic and Antarctic Scientific Research Institute.

Gakkel’ took part in various geographical expeditions, including expeditions on the icebreaker Sibiriakov (1932) and on the Cheliuskin (1934). He was the author of the first bathymetric map of the arctic basin. In 1966 one of the submerged mountain ridges was named after Gakkel’. He received two orders, as well as medals.
