Igor Evgenevich Gubin

Gubin, Igor’ Evgen’evich

 

Born Apr. 5 (18), 1906, in St. Petersburg. Soviet geologist and seismologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1976).

Gubin graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Mines in 1934. He was a staff member of the All-Union Geological Institute from 1932 to 1938 and of the Tadzhik Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1938 to 1945, when he became associated with the Institute of Lithosphere Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

Gubin’s principal works deal with seismic zoning and the seismotectonics of Middle Asia. He has established correspondences between geologic and seismic phenomena for use in predicting earthquakes. Gubin has been awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor and various medals.
