growing teratoma syndrome
growing teratoma syndrome
A rare condition seen in non-seminomatous germ-cell tumours, which is characterised by enlarging metastatic masses despite appropriate systemic chemotherapy and normalised serum markers.Management
Interferon is mostly ineffective. Surgery is the cornerstone of therapy and should be performed as soon as possible, as delays can lead to inoperable disease and locally advancing tumours can cause severe renal, biliary, duodenal or large vessel obstruction with bowel necrosis and urinary fistula, potentiating intraoperative and post-operative complications (e.g., ileus, acute pancreatitis, chylous ascites and sepsis).
