Igor’ Sviatoslavich

 

Born 1150; died 1202. Prince of Novgorod-Seversk from 1178 and of Chernigov from 1199; son of Sviatoslav Ol’govich, prince of Chernigov. Igor Sviatoslavich took part in the feudal wars for the Kievan throne in the second half of the 12th century. During the 1170’s he gained a series of victories over the Polovtsi and joined with other princes in an active struggle against them. In 1185 he organized an unsuccessful campaign against the Polovtsi and was taken prisoner. The campaign formed the subject matter of The Tale of Igor’s Campaign.
