Ilbars
Ilbars
(Elbars). The founder of an Uzbek dynasty in Khwa-razm (Khorezm). Ruler from 1511 to 1538.
Ilbars was the son of Berke-Sultan, of the Jochi family. He began to rule in the city of Wazir; he had been invited there in 1511 by the inhabitants, who had come out in opposition to the Iranian invaders. With the aid of military detachments recruited in the cities of Khwarazm, he drove the Iranian garrisons out of Urgench, Khiva, and other cities. Ilbars subjugated the Turkmen tribes in the region of Lake Balkhash and the Mangyshlak Peninsula. In 1524 he brought a significant part of northern Khurasan (part of northeast Iran) under his control.
