Hylastes

a genus of bark beetles. The insects measure 2.5-5 mm long; they are cylindrical in form and black or brownish black in color. These beetles are found primarily in the northern hemisphere. The larvae develop under the bark of the lower part of the trunk (near the roots); they also develop in the roots of conifers. The beetles damage the tree by chewing on the bark of the lower parts of the trunk (particularly of young trees). Of the approximately 50 species, ten are found in the USSR. The most dangerous species is Hylastes ater, which is found in Europe and Asia (Siberia); it develops on pines, nut pines, and, less frequently, firs.
