(born 1925), Japanese physicist. He investigated and pioneered the development of quantum-mechanical tunnelling of electrons in semiconductor devices, and designed the tunnel diode (also called the Esaki diode). He shared the 1973 Nobel Prize for Physics with Ivar Giaever (born 1929) and Brian D. Josephson (born 1940).
