Origin

Early 17th century; earliest use found in John Lightfoot (1602–1675), Hebraist and biblical scholar. From post-biblical Hebrew hapṭārāh (Babylonian Talmud: Megillah 29–31) from either hipṭar ‘to dismiss’ or its etymon pāṭar ‘to conclude’, the lesson being so called because it originally marked the end of a synagogue service.
