Early 20th century; earliest use found in Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute. From Mambwe nsima mush, porridge of meal (flour) and water, Biisa nsima porridge of meal and water, or a similar form in another Bantu language of eastern Zambia and northern Malawi.
