marezzo

noun maˈrɛtsəʊməˈrɛtsəʊ
  • A kind of artificial building stone made to resemble marble. More fully "marezzo marble".

Late 19th century; earliest use found in Encyclopaedia Britannica. From Italian marezzo artificial marble, marbling from marezzare to water (silk), to marble, perhaps from classical Latin mare + post-classical Latin -izare, with reference to the appearance of the waves of the sea.
