From classical Latin oculātus having sight, especially good sight, in post-classical Latin also marked with spots like eyes, also in scientific Latin in sense 2 (as a specific epithet from 1758 Linnaeus Systema Naturae (ed. 10) 394, 404, etc.) from oculus eye + -ātus.
