Mid 18th century; earliest use found in Chambers's Cyclopaedia. From scientific Latin Martynia (J. Martyn Historiae Plantarum Rariorum, adopted from earlier use by W. Houstoun) from the name of John Martyn, English botanist, apothecary, and miscellaneous writer + -ia.
