Later: a hospital or hospital department (†or a dispensary) where outpatients are treated by specialists.

Origin

Early 19th century; earliest use found in The Lancet. From German Poliklinik (1835 or earlier: see note; compare earlier †poliklinische Anstalt, †poliklinisches Institut, post-classical Latin Institutum policlinicum medico-chirurgicum, policlinica, noun, schola policlinica) from ancient Greek πόλις city + German Klinik medical teaching at the bedside of a patient, a hospital by which this is provided.
