Definition of Sakharov, Andrei in English: Sakharov, Andreiproper nounˈsakərɒf-ˌrôv (1921–89), Russian nuclear physicist and civil rights campaigner; full name Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov. Having helped to develop the Soviet hydrogen bomb, he campaigned against nuclear proliferation. He fought for reform and human rights in the USSR, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1975 but was also sentenced to internal exile 1980–6.
