Late 17th century; earliest use found in John Potter (d. 1747), archbishop of Canterbury. From post-classical Latin uniremis, adjective and noun from classical Latin ūni- + rēmus, partly after classical Latin birēmis, trirēmis, quadrirēmis, and partly after Hellenistic Greek ἑνήρης (adjective) having a single bank of oars.
