(In Leibniz's philosophy) the theory that God so devised the monads at creation that they appear to interact causally, although no communication actually exists between them; the organization of the universe as posited by this theory (as a proposed solution to the mind-body problem).

Early 18th century; earliest use found in Ephraim Chambers (?1680–1740), encyclopaedist. After French harmonie préétablie; compare post-classical Latin harmonia praestabilitata.
