An instrument consisting of a crescent-shaped blade attached to a long wooden pole, formerly used in bullfighting to hamstring a bull which could not be overcome by other means.

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in The Quarterly Review. From Spanish medialuna, media luna, lit. ‘half-moon’ from media, feminine of medio half + luna moon (from classical Latin lūna).
