A genus of bacteria (family Pasterellaceae) comprising small, Gram-negative, usually aerobic, rod-shaped or coccoid forms which are parasites of mammals and birds and cause systemic and localized infections including fowl cholera and haemorrhagic septicaemia; (also pasteurella) a bacterium of this genus.
Origin
Late 19th century; earliest use found in Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. From scientific Latin Pasteurella, genus name from the name of Louis Pasteur + -ella.
