Origin

Mid 16th century; earliest use found in Nicholas Udall (1504–1556), schoolmaster and playwright. From classical Latin Megara (from ancient Greek Μέγαρα (neuter plural), the name of a Greek city on the Saronic Gulf) + -ian. In form Megarean probably from classical Latin Megareus, adjective + -an.
