An insoluble, usually buff-coloured, amorphous organic compound originally obtained by heating ammonium thiocyanate, and formed as a by-product during the production of melamine.
Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Records of General Science. From German Melam, apparently an arbitrary formation.
