A machine used in the early stages of making some types of paper and board, in which the pulp is strained, excess water is extracted, and the web of pulp passed through rolls.
Origin
Late 19th century; earliest use found in Charles Frederick Cross (1855–1935), industrial chemist. Apparently from French presse-pâte (not dated in dictionaries of French) from presse-, combining form of presser + pâte.
