Originally: †an ulcer caused by venous stasis (obsolete ). Later: any of various disorders characterized by patchy or generalized hyperpigmentation of the skin; specifically hyperpigmentation of the face (also called chloasma).
Origin
Mid 16th century; earliest use found in Thomas Gale (c1507–1567), surgeon. From ancient Greek μέλασμα black spot from μελαίνειν to blacken (from μελαν-, μέλας black: see melano-) + -σμα, extended form of -μα.
