A mineral now recognized as a ferrian variety of ilmenite.
Origin
Late 18th century. Probably via German Menakanit (W. Gregor 1791, in Chemical Ann. 1 40) from Menaccan, variant of the place name Manaccan, Cornwall, the type locality + -ite. Gregor (a Cornish mineralogist and chemist) coined the name, but no English use by him is recorded; compare also French menakanite.
