Any of various large South-East Asian screw pines (family Pandanaceae), especially Pandanus atrocarpus, which yield leaves that can be woven into matting, etc.; the leaves of such a tree, or matting made from them.
Origin
Early 20th century; earliest use found in Journal Straits Branch Royal Asiatic Society. From Malay mengkuang any of the larger kinds of screw pine.
