Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Todd's Cyclopaedia of Anatomy and Physiology. From scientific Latin Menopoma, genus name, irregularly from ancient Greek μένειν, which does not form compounds in μενο- in Greek + πῶμα lid, so called from the persistence of the external gill slits in the adult.
