Origin

Late Middle English; earliest use found in Knyghthode and Bataile. From classical Latin crīminōsus (of persons) prone to vituperation, (of speeches) accusatory, reflecting badly on a person, shameful, dishonouring, constituting a criminal offence, guilty of an offence, vicious from crīmin-, crīmen + -ōsus. Compare Anglo-Norman criminous, criminose and Middle French crimineux (noun) person guilty of a crime, Middle French, French crimineux (adjective) criminal.
