Late 15th century. Apparently from post-classical Latin primagium payment for loading or unloading, of uncertain origin.

Origin

Late 19th century. From prime + -age. Compare French primage passage of water in the form of spray into the cylinder of an engine boiler, along with the steam, the amount of water present in this form.
