Mid 16th century; earliest use found in Robert Copland (fl. 1505–1547), translator and printer. From post-classical Latin mesenterium, mesenterion and its etymon ancient Greek μεσεντέριον, use as noun of neuter singular of μεσεντέριος from μέσος + ἔντερον + -ιος, suffix forming adjectives.
