Chiefly North American noun A hairstyle resembling that of any of the representations of Prince Valiant; either a short, straight bob or a longer, pageboy cut; frequently attributive in Prince Valiant haircut, etc. Origin1960s; earliest use found in Denton (Maryland) Journal. From the name of Prince Valiant, the hero of Hal Foster's newspaper comic strip Prince Valiant in the Days of King Arthur (first published in 1937) and of the two films and the television cartoon based on this from prince + valiant. |
