OriginLate 17th century; earliest use found in William Sherlock (d. 1707), Church of England clergyman and religious controversialist. From post-classical Latin probola (late 2nd or early 3rd cent. in Tertullian) and its etymon Hellenistic Greek προβολή emanation, projection, especially of the Son from the Father, specifically use of ancient Greek προβολή projection. |
